You, sir, are obviously listening to the wrong stuff. I listen to background news/talk/weather which isn’t real necessary to focus on. The only exception was one day when the radio host started talking about how cyclists ought to be banned from the road. I almost ran right OFF the road!

I’m proud to say that, after I recovered, I heard a cop call in and defend the right of cyclists to use the road. The host was real reluctant to argue with a cop but wasn’t quite willing to agree, either.

I also listen, on occasion, to what I call “cycling music.” Thematic music from Star Wars is a favorite in this category. One must keep “the Force” strongly when cycling in traffic with “the big Corellian ships” that populate our roads.

Ha. Maybe I was just playing my music too loud.

These phases are a breakdown of what I’ve discovered while riding. I think the headphones, for me, might have been more of a distraction. Also, being new to road cycling, I felt like I needed all my senses available for a safe commute.

I guess I missed some of Phase II. I wear headphones most of the time. They let traffic sounds & wind noise in so well I can’t always hear the radio.

I also listen when I drive & mostly drive with the windows up. Driving or riding, I stop before I talk on a cell phone.

If hearing traffic is so critical, why are the deaf allowed to drive? It’s because it’s where the attention is that’s important. That and the traffic is mostly visual.
