Ok. I am somewhat of a bike novice… So pardon my ignorance… I noticed in your pics that your bike is a single speed. I am hoping to convert my MTB to a single speed (freewheel) street bike… Urban assault bike, if you will… anyway, I cannot tell if your bike was built this way or if you made the conversion yourself, but I am looking for a local (DFW) source for parts/knowledge for such a transformation.
Thanks for any insight….
Steve
Hello Steve,
I’m assuming the bike you are referring to is my Redline Monocog. It actually came that way. It’s nice, but the gearing is set up for off-road and is a bit slow for street riding. My goal is to upgrade the chainring to something a bit larger.
As far as a conversion goes, I too have wondered the same thing, since I want to convert my wife’s old mountain bike to a single speed street cruiser. There are several things you can do, based on your budget. The cheap solution is how I currently have her bike set up. I simply removed the derailleurs, shortened the chain and positioned it onto specific gears. It works, but it’s ugly.
My next plan is to switch out the crank and chainrings to single ring. You might not need to change the crank, but for me, it’s all one piece. After that, I was just planning on getting a new, single speed wheel set. You don’t have to do this. I’ve seen conversion kits that can change any cassette based wheel into a single gear.
Finally, depending on your frame, you may need to get some sort of tensioner to keep your chain tight.
I hope that helps. Good luck and send some pics of your completed project.
