A Good Read
A few blogs, including Bike Friendly Oak Cliff and DFW Point-To-Point posted a link to this Kimberly Thorpe article in the Dallas Observer. I managed to find a copy and gave it a quick read over coffee yesterday. Love or hate the direction the city is going with it’s bike plan, if you are interested in cycling in Dallas, you should give it a read.
I saw it as an account of the recent history of Dallas Cycling – where we were and where we’re going. It’s actually a good read for those who haven’t been involved in advocacy for the past 10-20 years.
I found it particularly interesting because I just finished “Pedaling Revolution” by Jeff Mapes. It has a lot of the national history elements that, together with the Observer article, give a “recent history” of cycling around the US. Unfortunately, the Mapes book couldn’t really figure out what it was about. The Observer article was much better focused.
No, I didn’t buy “Pedaling Revolution.” I got it through the library and it’s not the kind of cycling book I’d want to buy since once its read, it takes up shelf space.
I have a strong suspicion that the Dallas story is one that is playing out around the country. Read over at CommuteOrlando and I’m not sure it’s not a whole lot different.
