Hump Day Pics Of The Week – 43

with 2 comments

It’s time to pick the Hump Day Pics Of The Week. Again, thanks goes out to the contributors to the Suburban Assault Flickr Pool.

There are many different opinions about helmets. Should you wear one? Should you HAVE to wear one? I think (with adults) it should be a personal choice and not a law. Regardless, helmets are a part of our culture so this weeks theme will be “helmets”.

I hope you enjoy this set and check back each week to see what shots get picked. Be sure to check out the Flickr page to see all the awesome bike shots shared by our extremely talented contributors.

  2. I’m of the same mindset as you, I think for adults, they should not be compulsory. Unfortunately, the Australian government doesn’t share that opinion.

A mandated helmet is a hurdle for people to overcome. The inconvenience of carrying one. The helmet hair. It provides an easy excuse for ppl not to ride. And so, becomes a barrier. It also increases the perception that cycling is dangerous – something the stats don’t support.

Here in Melbourne, we’ve recently had a sharebike scheme set up by our state government. There’s only one other city on the planet, with mandated helmet laws, that has a sharebike scheme. Remains to be seen how successful it is, as people ARE being fined.

Oh… and regardless of the law… I’d wear almost all of the time. My two girls reach for their helmets if we’re riding. It’s a good thing.
