Progress – My Walmart Gets A Bike Rack
This Walmart might have one all along, but I’ve never noticed it. Bike racks have become a rare sight in SUV friendly suburban Texas – probably from the lack of need. In my opinion it works both ways. Provide folks with the proper facilities and eventually they’ll use them.
Still, this is proof that even big retail chains are starting to figure it out. Now it’s time to start filling it up.
As I’ve been building up my grocery bike, I’ve been thinking about this more and more… gotta see which stores have bike racks, and think about how to convince those that don’t to put one in. I know the Target on Plano Rd. has had one for a long time.

Every Target I’ve looked at has a bike rack, and mostly right near the front door. Every Walmart seems to have one, though sometimes you have to look around a bit. Now my local QuickTrip has a bike rack. When I notice, I mention it to the management how much I like it even if it is a bad rack because even a bad rack beats a “no bikes, dogs, or vermin” sign.

Yes, the Targets around me have racks as well. However, the Walmarts, Tom Thumbs, Krogers, Walgreens, Home Depots, Lowes, and most of the strip malls – around me – typically don’t.
I usually use the fence around the garden center at the Walmarts. I’ve seen other folks lock up on the cart return.
That’s a great idea talking to the management. I’ll be sure to do that with every place that is bike friendly.
