Office Parking

Office Parking

One of the best features of my job – that makes it so easy to bike commute – is that they don’t mind that I use the storage room as a bike garage. It’s a good thing too, since the building doesn’t offer a proper bike rack out front. I’m okay with that, because it’s easier to keep an eye on it here.

It does get in the way, and every once in a while, I’ll here it slam to the ground. My co-workers will try to get something off the shelf, but don’t want to bother me to move it. Inevitably, it’ll get bumped and knocked over. When I rush in to check it out, they’re usually tangled up with the bike, a ream of paper and a guilty look on their face. I assure them that my bike has seen worse. After all, I ride it.

If anything, I feel guilty for having my crap in the way. We’re about to expand our space, and even though it’s too late to ask for a proper locker room and shower (the building isn’t plumbed for that), I’m thinking about asking if I can install a hook to hang it up, out of the way.

Back To My Work Commute

First 2012 Work Commute Panda

Baby steps. Last year, my simple goal was to bike commute the equivalent to a full tank of gas. For me that was around 360 miles. Those miles couldn’t include any riding done for fun or recreation, but rather only miles that I replaced a car trip with a bike. Also, if for any reason, I needed a car to ‘rescue’ me from being stranded, those miles didn’t count either. Fortunately, that didn’t happen.

Well, I reached my goal with an extra 100 miles on top. Not bad, with it being one of the hottest and driest  summers in north Texas. Of course that’s nothing compare to the thousands of miles true bike commuters put on their yearly ride – but for this ol’ car driver, it was an accomplishment.

This year, my goal is to double my effort, where I plan to ride enough to replace two tanks of gas. I got my first commute in yesterday, which was an earlier start than last year. Hopefully, my work schedule will give me enough time to keep up a good momentum.

My Bike To Work Week – 2011

Ride To Work - Happy Trail Sign

Well, it’s the League of American BicyclistsNational Bike To Work Week, and I tried to participate as much as I could.

Of course, my initial goal was to ride every day this week. Because of my crazy schedule at work, it got trimmed down to Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Now, because of other commitments, I won’t be able to bike commute to work on Friday (National Bike To Work Day – the day I really wanted to do this).

Still, I got a couple of days in this week, and I use this event to kick off my season of bike to work commuting. It won’t be every day, but when my work load allows a normal day and the weather is nice, I’ll be commuting by bike.

Check out some pics from my rides:

As a side note, of the three cities that I ride through to get to work (Richardson, Dallas and Plano), west Plano is the worst. The traffic in west Plano is not bike friendly. The neighborhoods (at least the ones on my route) are not interconnected – so a quiet, back street route is out of the question.

Basically, the biggest deterrent for my commute is having to ride through that part of town.

My Bike To Work Day Ride – Pics

I chose a different route for Bike To Work Day. It was a little bit longer, but with less car traffic. Here are some pics:

Happy Bike To Work Day

leave a comment »

The League of American Bicyclists recognizes May as National Bike Month, this week as Bike To Work Week and today as Bike To Work Day. Not only did I celebrate by riding my bike to work today, but I also went a new route. It was about a mile longer, but less car traffic.

What did you do to recognize Bike To Work Day? We’d love to hear your story.

Another Bike To Work Day

leave a comment »

I did another bike commute to work today. This time it was for Bike To Work Week.

I managed to shave off a few minutes from my last commute, but it still eats up a lot of my family and home time. I was able to leave the office early today (read: on time) which got me home about 20 minutes later than with my car commute (when I leave the office late). As good as this accomplishment makes me feel, I wish I worked closer to home.

My biggest hurdle is the intersection of Plano Parkway and the Dallas North Tollway. Car congestion, high speed and irrational driving occurs there the most. I’m going to look into an alternate route for Friday, but I don’t feel very optimistic.

Here are some pics from the commute home:
