Bike Friendly Oak Cliff’s Third Annual Dallas Tweed Ride – Recap And Pics

with 6 comments

I participated in Bike Friendly Oak Cliff‘s Third Annual Dallas Tweed Ride yesterday and had a blast. As with the previous three years, the turnout for this event was amazing. Hundreds of riders came from all over the DFW Metroplex – some dressed in fashionable, period attire while others in their best cycle chic.

Even though it was a lovely day to ride in north Texas, it was a bit too warm for heavy tweed. That didn’t stop the spirit of the event and folks made the most of it.

As with the previous two tweed rides, this one started near Dealey Plaza. The group made a loop through downtown Dallas, where curious onlookers smiled and waved. From there, the group made it’s way over the Houston Viaduct bridge into Oak Cliff. We eventually made it to our first stop, the Turner House on Rosemont, just south of Davis.

At the Turner House, the group visited with each other, took pictures, enjoyed some refreshments and engaged in a couple of tug-of-war games. The teams were East Dallas versus Oak Cliff, and both sides won a match.

Later that afternoon, the group made it’s way towards the Bishop Arts District to take part in the third annual CliffFest. From there, folks went their own way. Some of us rolled back into downtown Dallas to catch the DART rail home. That, in itself, was quite an adventure since we ended up with about 8 bikes and a couple of strollers on a crowded train.

Here are some pics of the event. Click here to see the entire set. You can also find some great shots on the Biking In Dallas blog (here and here as well) and on the Dallas Cycle Chic blog.

Bike Friendly Oak Cliff Hosts Dallas’ Third Tweed Ride

leave a comment »

For the third year, Bike Friendly Oak Cliff will be hosting the Dallas Tweed Ride. Here are the details:

Date: Sunday, November 13, 2011
Time: 1:30 pm
Start:  The grassy knoll in Downtown Dallas (at Dealey Plaza)
RSVP: via Facebook

“The ride will take us through historic Oak Cliff with stops at the Turner House for lawn games and merriment, the Bishop Arts District to stroll the outdoor market at CliffFest, and finally returning to Downtown Dallas. This ride has become an institution in Dallas bringing out over one hundred chaps and lasses all wearing their finest knickers and caps. Last year’s event included dancing, tug-of-wars, umbrella jousting, cucumber sandwich tosses, and beer relays. Expect all of that and more as we prepare for another rousing ride through our fare city.” More info here.

This is a fun ride. If you haven’t tried it before, we suggest that you try it. The pace is slow and the scene is an amazing spectacle of interesting bicycle attire. It may run a bit late, so don’t forget to bring your lights. Here are my pics from last year.
