Back From Austin

with one comment

Sorry that it’s been a while since my last post. I spent a good part of last weekend in Austin, Texas for the SXSW Interactive conference. As with everywhere I go, I’m always on the lookout for good bike scenery. Well, in Austin, that wasn’t much of a problem. Here are just a few, random sightings.

This first pic is from the SXSWi welcome party, hosted by Frog Design and Microsoft. They always have cool, interactive games to play. Just like in the movie TRON, this is a light bike game where users pedal for more speed and steer to block their opponent with their light trail. The crowd can watch the progress on the big screen.

Similar to what BikeDFW has with their bike smoothie machine, Google had stationary blender bikes.

The Austin Convention Center’s bike parking racks were always full.

As well as other racks around town.

Velolet and Tern offered demo loaner bikes for those lucky enough to be registered and early.

And of course, there were the bicycle pedicabs. These folks were everywhere, day and night, rain or shine.

Heading To Austin For SXSW Interactive

leave a comment »

This weekend I’ll be making my 4th trip to SXSW Interactive. Most of tech/trend stuff that my co-workers and I learn will be shared through our agency blog and twitter at LAUNCH. Any interesting sights or spectacles will be posted on dickdavid.com. Of course, if I see anything bike related (I will be in Austin), I will be shared here.

SXSFixed Number 2

They’re doing it again. A team of really devoted, cycling enthusiasts are riding from Dallas to Austin for the South By Southwest Festival – all on fixed gear bikes. This started at last year’s SXSW, just to see if it could be done. Since then, the group made another trip to Austin for the ACL (they called their ride ACHell) event in October.

For this year’s SXSW, 13 fixed gear riders will heading out on Sunday to make that journey again. Check out their blog at SXSFixed.com or follow them on Twitter @sxsfixed. They are also having a SXSFixed Send Off Party tomorrow night from 8-10 at the Texas Theater. Part of the proceeds will go to support the riders.

We wish them a safe ride with lots of tailwind.

Suburban Assault In Austin for SXSW

with one comment

In case you were wondering about the lack of posting the past few days, it’s because I’ve been in Austin for the SXSW Interactive Festival. My agency, Launch, sent my copywriter and me (for the second year) to learn about the latest online trends. It’s a non-stop fusion of seminars, networking and learning that’s going to take a while to process – but well worth it.

There are some exciting things to see in Austin:
– Bikes EVERYWHERE!
– Bike lanes were everywhere.
– Pedicabs seemed to outnumber the taxis around the convention center. Sorry, I didn’t get any pics – but I’ll try later this morning.

Even with all the excitement of SXSW, I still have a few regrets:
– I miss, miss, miss my family!
– I did not have time to ride a bike. However, we have been walking a bunch.
– Missing the Bike Hugger Mobile Social ride and party at Mellow Johnny’s. I was here for work, so I had to keep my time work related.
– Missing the arrival of the SXSFixed group to Austin. I really wanted to cheer them on as they arrived, but again, I was there to work.

Here is a link to some of my ‘extra’ flickr pics. We’ll be heading back to Dallas later today.
